2015 Walleye Fishing - Let the harvest begin!
03/23/2015
2014 started with a super late ice out and continued cold through July! 2015 already looks better! |
The Walleye pictured is a rare "mid day" Walleye off the chain. Anyone who knows me knows I rarely fish in the middle of the day. But last years late ice out and cold water all summer changed in early August. We finally had summer arrive and got some much needed, sustained warm weather. The fish went crazy. On the day of Full moon, August 9th, I caught a 21 1/2 inch Smallmouth, the 29 inch Walleye pictured, and had a 30 LB Musky follow!! It did not matter what you were fishing for or when (11am Walleye) the fish were biting. The combination of moon phase, perfect weather pattern, and lots of time on the water made for a great week and a half of fishing. It was just another example of how weather dictates each years peak time to fish. It is different year to year but in 2014 the key was that blast of warm weather to start August. It was something we had all been waiting for, even the fish.

In 2015, after many years of having a 18" size limit, the Flambeau Chain will now have a 15 inch minimum. Also a 20-24 inch slot where no fish can be kept. One fish over 24 inches is allowed. With these new regulations a lot more Walleyes will be kept in 2015.
More to come.....
